JOB SUMMARY The primary purpose of this position is to assist the project manager with implementing commercial recycling in the business districts along Olive Boulevard. This internship is funded through a grant with the St. Louis County Department of Public Health. This internship will provide an in-depth look at recycling and waste management in a business setting, as well as the logistics of setting up new solid waste service, replacing existing service, and combining services between businesses. A large component of this project is educating the business staff and finding creative solutions to implementing, improving, and streamlining the commercial solid waste program. (Estimated 15 – 20 hours per week, starting salary $12 per hour, grant activity expected to end December 2018)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES The internship will be a hands-on learning experience, from researching best practices of business recycling programs to working with the companies’ green team members and sustainability managers to design and implement the program. The intern will also assist with designing surveys and educational literature, PowerPoint presentations for employee trainings and contract logistics with the haulers.  Communicate with businesses – Determine if the business’s current solid waste service is adequate and what University City can offer  Determine space and container assessment of the Loop businesses in alleys, parking lots and enclosures.  Develop and deliver promotional and informational materials for businesses  Waste and recycling data collection  Attend business district meetings as applicable  Monitor, sort, and collect data on public space trash/recycling containers  Monitor, inventory, and apply signage to commercial recycling and trash dumpsters  Post educational and informational materials on social media, post signage, hang flyers, etc.  Supply commercial customers with interior bins, decals, and other items to assist in promoting recycling  Ride along on sanitation routes  Other duties as assigned

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Excellent written and oral communications skills, substantial amount of recycling knowledge, strong desire to learn about waste management, professionalism while working in the business community, knowledge of Microsoft Office.

PHYSICAL/VISUAL ENVIRONMENT, ACTIVITIES OR DEMANDS  Sitting, talking, hearing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, and pushing.  Concentrated mental and visual attention with normal hand-eye coordination.  Clarity of vision at 20 inches-corrected or uncorrected.  Clarity of vision at night.  Able to work inside and outside in all weather conditions.  Occasional moving of items up to 60lbs.
