Bureau of Professional Standards
The Bureau of Professional Standards assists with accreditation. The Department is responsible for maintaining and revising, as necessary, the Department’s Policy and Procedure Manual. The Department also provides the following:
· Assistance to other Department bureaus in the form of crime and traffic analysis.
· Crime prevention and planning research.
· Provides a Victim Service Unit, which is comprised of two full-time civilian employees who are specially trained with assisting victims and their families to deal effectively with the ravages of crime.
· Sponsors “Focus Group” meetings. These meetings are comprised of concerned citizen’s who meet once a month at the Community Center to address concerns and issues affecting their neighborhoods and community.
· Sponsors an annual 12-week Citizens Police Academy. Citizens are taught the basic day-to-day functions of the Police Department as well as the different bureaus responsibilities. This course includes the citizen’s participating in role playing and concludes with a graduation ceremony and a graduation certificate.
· Sponsors the National Night Out Celebration which is held annually on the first Tuesday in August. The 2006 inaugural city-wide celebration at the Centennial Commons was a great success. This location will be the site location for future NNO celebrations.
The Bureau of Professional Standards Commander shall conduct investigations of a confidential nature in matters involving deficiencies, of and accusations made against, civilian and commissioned Department Personnel. |
