U. City Recognized for our Recycling Efforts!
Over the last several years, U. City has received recognition for our recycling efforts as follows:
2009 - University City was recognized as a Sustainable Community and received the 2009 of the Heroes of the Planet Award. The award was presented by the St. Louis Business Journal in October. The award program is designed to honor and promote businesses that have out performed their industry in promoting and advancing environmental sustainability within the region.
2008 - University City was the Division 4 winner of the $5,000 award for the most aluminum cans recycled during October 2008 as a part of the Cash for Cans: City Recycling Challenge.
· Received the 2006 SWANA Bronze Excellence Award for the collection system.
· Received recognition from E-Cycle for the 2006 St. Louis Regional Partnership for Electronics Recovery Program.
· Received the 2005 SWANA Silver Excellence Award for the collection system.
· Received the 2004 SWANA Bronze Excellence Award for recycling.
· Recognized for our Outstanding Electronics Program in 2003 by the Missouri Recycling Association.
· Invited as a guest speaker to share information about our electronics recycling program at the 2003 Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) conference in New Orleans.
· Received the Environmental Excellence Honorable Mention award in 2002 from Choose Environmental Excellence for having one of the longest running curbside recycling programs in the region, maintaining a recycling drop-off center and holding special drop off collection events for electronics and textiles.
· Electronics Recycling Program Article, “U. City Demonstrates State Leadership in Electronics Recycling” published in the Environmental Issue of the Missouri Municipal Review June 2002 issue.
· City-Wide Recycling Program, “U. City Recycles Everything from “A” to “Z” article published in the Environmental Issue of the Missouri Municipal Review June 2001 issue.
· Received a Certificate of Recognition from the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District in 1999 for hosting a recycling fair collecting 8,121 pounds of textiles and 7,538 pounds of magazines.
