Single Stream Recycling

 Recyclable Materials List

recycling cartRecycling just got easier for University City residents. Participating residents recycle using the Blue Single Stream Recycling Cart with wheels and a lid.  It replaced the two curbside recycling bins. The new single-stream cart can be used for all recyclables and University City will deliver the recyclable materials directly to the local recycling vendor for processing. The program is aimed at reducing waste and increasing recycling levels and participation. With single-stream recycling, all recyclable materials can be placed in one container, no sorting required.

The blue single stream recycling cart has wheels for pulling it to the curbside.  Single stream recycling is a one-cart program that allows all recyclables to be placed in one large cart, with no sorting necessary and is part of a nation-wide move, which:

·         Is easy to do, recyclables are placed into one single container

·         Is easy to use, just wheel the cart to the curb

·         Saves money, the City uses an automated truck to reduce labor costs

Single Stream Recycling was implemented citywide as of April 2008.  Residents do not pay additional fees to participate since recycling is already included in the refuse billing.  However, more residents are participating in the city?s recycling program because recycling in one cart is much easier than sorting the material and placing it in two bins.

Cardboard is collected inside the recycling cart - break down and flatten boxes to 1 foot by 1 foot sections and place them in the blue single stream recycling cart. Whole boxes or cardboard outside the recycling cart will not be collected. You may also drop off cardboard at the 24-hour Recycling Center at 975 Pennsylvania (rear parking lot).

Yard Waste is collected at the curbside - grass clippings, leaves, twigs, plants or small brush must be separated from household trash and placed in 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags (Kraft bags) with a yard waste sticker attached. No dirt, wood chips or logs are accepted in yard waste bags.

Yard waste stickers are not required October 15 through December 31.

During all other months, each bag must have a yard waste sticker attached. The stickers can be purchased from local stores and are sold in packs of 5.  Residents with alley pickup will have yard waste collected at the front curb on Mondays.

Brush and Tree Limbs that are not larger than 3 inches thick will be collected at the front curb along with your regular trash.  Residents may tie brush and limbs with twine into bundles 4 feet long and 2 feet around (a maximum of 6 bundles will be collected from a single household per week) for collection on household trash collection days. Residents that utilize alley pickup will have brush and limbs (yard waste) collected at the front curb on Mondays.
