Function
The Community Development Department enforces the property maintenance code, building code, mechanical code, plumbing code, electrical code, environmental code, animal enforcement code and zoning code; coordinates economic development activities and is responsible for performing research, preparing planning studies and advising on all matters affecting the physical development of the City.
The Department reviews and makes recommendations regarding proposed City Council action relating to land use, economic development, building codes, property maintenance codes, and the implementation of planning recommendations.
The Department provides staff for ten boards, commissions, and authorities, including: the City Plan Commission, the Historic Preservation Commission, the Land Clearance Redevelopment Authority, the Industrial Development Authority, the Tax Increment Financing Commission, the Board of Adjustment, the Infill Review Board, the Board of Appeals, the Economic Development Retail Sales Tax Board and the U City/Olivette Joint Redevelopment Task Force. Olive Boulevard Forum
The City of University City and the University City Chamber of Commerce co-hosted an Olive Boulevard forum on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. The purpose of the meeting was to provide property owners, businesses, and other interested parties with an update of Olive Boulevard plans, programs, projects, and events. Draft Parkview Gardens Neighborhood Sustainability Plan Online
The City received a $315,000 TIGER II grant to prepare a neighborhood sustainability plan for the Parkview Gardens area of the City. Several planning partners, the City and its consultant (H3 Studios) have been working on the Plan for several months.
