Fire Prevention Week 2012 - October 7 - 13

National Fire Prevention Week (October 7-13, 2012)

Stay Safe With These Fire Prevention Tips

By , About.com Guide

See More About:
During National Fire Prevention Week, October 7 - 13, 2012 attention is focused on promoting fire safety and prevention, however we should practice fire safety all year long. Many potential fire hazards go undetected because people simply do not take steps to fireproof their home.

Many bedroom fires are caused by misuse or poor maintenance of electrical devices, careless use of candles, smoking in bed, and children playing with matches and lighters. Most potential hazards can be addressed with a little common sense. For example, be sure to keep flammable items like bedding, clothes and curtains at least three feet away from portable heaters or lit candles, and never smoke in bed. Also, items like appliances or electric blankets should not be operated if they have frayed power cords, and electrical outlets should never be overloaded.

Fire Safety Checklist:

  • Install and maintain a working smoke alarm outside of every sleep area and remember to change the battery at least once a year.
  • Designate two escape routes from each bedroom and practice them regularly.
  • Teach everyone the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" technique in case clothing catches on fire.
  • Avoid storing old mattresses in the home or garage.
  • Teach kids that matches, lighters and candles are tools, not toys. If you suspect that a child is playing with fire, check under beds and in closets for telltale signs like burned matches. Matches and lighters should be stored in a secure drawer or cabinet.

America's Heartland Remember Group collage    check presentation to Missouri Injured Marine Fund    BC Hinson, Captain Calhoun, Tom Rollins and Rick Randall

On Monday November 21, 2011, the University City Fire Department was invited to join the America’s Heartland Remembers group for a news conference.  The conference was held at the St. Louis Forest Park Art Museum at 3:00pm.  From the sales of the flag display and other fund raisers, America’s Heartland Remembers group was able to give the Missouri Injured Marine Fund a check for $100,000.  The group also donated 1,000 flags to "The Flag Man", Larry Eckhardt. Larry gives his time to honor fallen heroes with roadside flag displays at their funerals throughout the Midwest. For the groups next project, on display was a collage of pictures taken by Tom Rollins and Rick Randall.  The group is putting together a book commemorating the 8 days the flag display was available to the public in September.  The pictures taken will represent the emotions people displayed as they remembered the events of that tragic day ten years ago.  One of the photos on the collage is Paramedic Firefighter Theresa Colp, UCFD.  She was at the display to purchase a flag for the Fire Department of a fallen firefighter and police officer.  When she was out on the field looking for the flags she wanted she took the time to straighten any leaning flags.  This caught the eye of photographer, Tom Rollins.  Mr. Rollins stopped Private Colp and talked with her about the reason she was there.  To honor Private Colp and all the University City Fire Department for their dedication to public service, Tom Rollins and Rick Randall presented Battalion Chief Bill Hinson with a fallen firefighter’s flag from the September display at the news conference.  The group is planning on selling the collage and the book to the public within the next 60-90 days.

Thank you to the hard work of everyone at “America’s Heartland Remembers” group and all the First Responders men and women. The flag display was sponsored by: Pace Properties, Castle Contracting, Guarantee Electric, Stock & Associates, Mid America Chevy Dealers, The Daniel and Henry Co.

Today Battalion Chief Brain Moore, Paramedic Firefighters Nick Robben and Nathan Davis and Mary T. Beck, Missouri Baptist Medical Center Senior Media Coordinator, were interviewed for an upcoming segment on Heart Lifeline Alliance; http://www.missouribaptist.org/?id=31260&sid=9 to be aired on Channel 5; date and time to be announced.

A program about the Heart Lifeline Alliance being used nationwide will air on Channel 5 on Wednesday 10/26 at 7-8PM and ABC 30 will air the program on Saturday 10/29 at 5-6PM.  University City Fire Department will be included in the story because our department was the first in St. Louis County to bring a successful Scene to Balloon patient to Missouri Baptist Medical Center.

To see how we have been involved:

EMS STEMI thru Missouri Baptist Hospital:

What is EMS STEMI?

Is a system they’re trying to instill with pre hospital care for medics to realize when someone is in urgent need of the cath lab, hence the Scene to Balloon. STEMI stands for “ST elevation myocardial infarction”.  On a EKG strip (heart monitor) ST is a wave on the paper which represents a part of how the heart is beating, if it’s “elevated” on the cardiac strip this is a representation of a possible “infarction” (heart attack) in progress. The idea is to get the pt. into the cath lab within 45 minutes.

Congratulations Everyone!!

We had our first EMS STEMI activation from University City.  The two paramedics were Nick Werner and Nick Robben.  They did a fabulous job.  The patient had a total blockage of the right coronary that was opened successfully by Dr. Reilly. Total "Scene to Balloon" time was 61 minutes.  I will wait for official documentation but the Door to Balloon time at MBMC was around 31 minutes.  This time is from EMS documented arrival at MBMC to balloon.

On July 28, 2011, Lafayette Fire Company #1 Restaurant dedicated a table in honor of the University Fire Department. The department, retirees, family and friends were invited for the unveiling. The table is dedicated to all the current and past members of the department, and to the memories of Captain Julius Acoff and Captain David Gavwiner. In 2010, the Department celebrated 100 years of service to the University City community. The Fire Department runs approximately 6000 Fire and EMS calls per year.
