[ARCHIVED] University City Requests Federal Aid for Buyouts Post Flooding

September 26, 2022, University City, Mo – The Mayor and City Council for the City of University City have filed appropriate Notice of Intent (NOI) documents with the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) asking for state and federal disaster relief funding to purchase homes condemned due to flood damage during excessive rain events this past summer. Once submitted, the review process will begin, and the government has provided no timeline for a decision or closure.

“We understand that families in our community are still dealing with an extremely stressful situation and we are doing everything possible to expedite a resolution, but once documentation has been submitted it is completely out of our control,” said NAME, TITLE for University City.

Although approximately 380 properties were the most severely impacted by the flooding, the City was advised that there was little chance for approval by the government for that number of buyouts. As a result, University City submitted buyout documentation based on fair market value for 24 properties on Wilson and Burch, as well as the Hafner Court Apartments property, all of which have the best chance of being funded.  If approved, up to 25 percent of the buyout funding must be matched by the City for the Wilson and Burch properties, while Hafner Court Apartments would qualify for 100 percent government funding.

The City will continue to monitor the government’s response to the request and keep residents informed but advises residents that the process could be lengthy.
