[ARCHIVED] Parks, Recreation & Public Areas Facilities Repair Update

In July 2022, University City sustained historic 500-year floods. While many homes were damaged in our area during these floods, University City facilities were also heavily damaged.

Since the flood, University City staff and the City Council have been working diligently with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well as the State Emergency Management Agency to submit requests for reimbursement to repair City-owned facilities.

In late January 2024, FEMA authorized reimbursement of repairs for Centennial Commons; the Central Garage and associated facilities; and the Heman Park Community Center. Within each of these reimbursement agreements, there are terms and conditions the City is bound to follow when repairing the facilities per FEMA regulations.

On Feb.16, an open bid process started to hire a contractor to begin construction of the repairs needed to Centennial Commons, the Heman Park Community Center and the Central Garage. Bidding closes on Mar. 19. Once awarded, construction can begin and anticipated timelines for completion will be shared on the City’s website.

Construction is nearly completed on the repairs to Jack Buck Field. The field has been reconstructed per FEMA regulations and will now be utilized as a fastpitch softball and youth baseball field.

Our Recreation Division staff is in the process of preparing for a full pool season and increasing programming for the community at Centennial Commons. Staff is also looking to hire lifeguards for the pool season, instructors for programming such as Zumba and Personal Training and a Senior Services Coordinator. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding.

More updates will be provided as they become available.
